Our shop's forte is allowing our customers to casually dine on high-quality delicacies, as we offer Japanese food made with fresh seafood and seasonal vegetables. Our famous sea eel is fresh enough to be eaten as sashimi because we only start preparing it once we receive an order. Our Japanese sake selection varies according to the season. These drinks go perfectly with Japanese cuisine.

The restaurant is a very cozy space. Regular customers like to sit at the counter, which is perfect for people who come to drink alone or for normal dining. We also have a semi-private room for groups or for entertaining guests. Drop in anytime to enjoy the delicious delicacies.

Izakaya pub GENSAI HONTEN in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Our variety of Japanese cuisine uses the best ingredients of the season. We are famous for sea eel cuisine prepared as sashimi, grilled with no seasoning, or as tempura. You can thus enjoy "sea eel cuisine" prepared in three different ways.

We keep the fresh live sea eels we receive in water tanks in our restaurant. When you order sea eel, we take the live sea eel and prepare it for you. This results in the maximum freshness and quality. As to not waste any part of the eel, we also serve deep fried eel bones with the eel.

Choose the preparation method you want depending on your mood that day. We can also prepare each half of the eel separately.

    Sashimi

    We highly recommend having our eel as sashimi. Sea eel cannot be eaten raw unless it is really fresh, so this is a rare treat. The texture of the meat is the main draw, and you can only try it here since we keep live sea eels in our shop.

  • 焼

    Grilled

    Soft and fluffy grilled sea eel cooked with no seasoning allows you to better experience the mild flavor characteristic of the fresh sea eel. While savoring the flavor of the ingredients, enjoy it seasoned with natural salt or wasabi.

  • 揚

    Fried

    Try tempura that has been fried to have a crunchy outside and a soft inside. The fresh eel's umami flavor trapped within fills your mouth in one bite.

We have a large selection of Japanese sake that goes great with our wonderful delicacies. We are proud of our wide selection that both first-timers and connoisseurs can enjoy. We have around ten of the most famous Japanese sake brands that everyone knows of, around ten or fifteen seasonal brands, and even rare premium sake brands. We can recommend the best sake to go with the food you order, so feel free to ask us for recommendations. We can also be the second place you visit while bar hopping when you are out drinking.
